And there were Pegasus and Andromeda, and there were Castor and Pollux, those bright twins, brothers of beauty. And there ran the Great Hunter with his dogs major and minor, hunting Lepus and Taurus across the heavens. Claude craned her neck to see them all, but the sky was too wide by far. She smiled and pressed her hand against the cool windowpane. Behind her Jyoti was sleeping, breathing deep breaths; Jyoti had not felt her roommate awaken and climb out of bed. Claude exhaled. She watched as the warmth of her body, carried by her breath, fogged the windowpane. Her breath carried words as well, quiet so as not to wake the slumbering Jyoti. "There is something in the stars...," she murmured. Something, she meant, something that troubled and stung, like a dust mote in the singular vast eye of the sky. She pressed her palm more forcefully against the glass, as though it were ice and she could melt a hand-shaped hole through its clarity. She was smiling, smiling-- there was something in her smile as there was something in the stars. She smiled, and the red light of Mars was dancing in her eyes.
