More mini-stories, continued from this post!

Same rules as before:
1. Write exactly one page in word processing document (to the line).
2. Write the first thing (that works) that pops into your head.
3. Don't think too hard!
3a. Don't edit, over-editor.

Title: Whisper (suggested by [livejournal.com profile] redvelvetaddict)
Universe: Goldenhour
Character: Ileana, aka. Lily

It's wrong to leave your home. )

Title: Goodbye (suggested by [livejournal.com profile] boredgods)
Universe: Goldenhour
Character: Nora, Bertrand, Bevan, Bernard

What was it that brought them together? )

I really needed to do a writing focus exercise, so I thought I would set myself the task of writing very small stories of no more than one page in my word processing document, using prompts from an old post in this journal in which I asked you kind readers for prompts.

I wrote two of them today. I didn't allow myself to be too critical, which is always my downfall, and I just wrote about the first subject that came to mind when I considered the prompt. I also didn't edit, since these are just exercises.

Title: Catfish (prompt suggested by [livejournal.com profile] chypie)
Universe: Goldenhour
Character: Bernard (mentions of Bevan)

He leans into the water, immersing his head. )

Title: Neck (prompt suggested by [livejournal.com profile] luckykitty)
Universe: Goldenhour
Character: Chester

Was it a dream that woke him? )

Title: Two Traitors
Universe: Goldenhour
Word count: 4,540
Rating: PG
Warnings: mild violence, mentions of blood, references to death.
Characters/Pairings: Damien/Alex, John Good, references to Alex/James
Summary: Sometimes it is only our friends who keep us human.
Notes: Written for [livejournal.com profile] redvelvetaddict. <3 Set after James' death but years before Branwen comes to Best-Loved.

It wasn't that he didn't regret the loss of his honor and the tarnishing of his title. )

Title: Brothers and Birds
Universe: Goldenhour
Rating: PG
Word count: 2,663
Characters: Damien, Mora, Bernard, Bevan, Nora
Summary: Damien tells Mora a bedtime story. She asks for one that isn't happy.
Notes: Written for redvelvetaddict. <3

The night was cold but soft, the chill in the air a gentle one. )

Thanks to everyone who gave me prompts! You can still give me more, here. I'm going to try to do at least one prompt from each prompt-comment. :3

Title: Heartless
Universe: Wind & Foxes
Characters: Imbri, Nelius
Word count: 803
Warnings: none
Notes: Based on a prompt from redvelvetaddict, who wanted Imbri and Nelius interacting. They don't interact a lot in the novel, but they basically live in the same family for decades following the events of the novel, so they must have a relationship of some kind.

Nelius gave a start, not expecting to turn and see someone standing behind him. )
breakfastofchampions: (monster alex)
I wanted to write a short piece about one or more of the Goldenhour characters, and to help inspire me, I asked for a prompt! And I got one.

If anyone else has a thematic prompt that might help me, please let me know in the comments here. It can be an object, idea, phrase, quote, a particular character from the story, a pairing--anything. Feel free to contribute as many as you like! (Oh yes, and if you prefer to ask for characters from another story of mine, that's cool, too.)

Title: By the Sword
Universe: Goldenhour
Character: Alexander Sable
Word count: 542
Warnings: none
Notes: For the prompt "skill", suggested by redvelvetaddict. This is from Alex's PoV, but before things really get started with Bertrand's plot, so his ideas about his future are not indicative of what actually happens to him.

He is not a real knight. )
breakfastofchampions: (bertrand)
Title: Secrets Past
Universe: Goldenhour
Characters: Branwen, Alex
Rating: PG
Warnings: none
Word count: 982
Summary: Branwen doesn't entirely trust her new guardians.
Notes: Written for [community profile] origfic_bingo, for the prompt "time travel". I decided to end this where I did because I think I'm going to incorporate it into the novel rather soon, so it'll be developed more, but not right now.

Was it normal for someone to keep absolutely no remnants of their past? )
breakfastofchampions: (acacia)
Title: The Quality of Light
Universe: Goldenhour
Characters, pairings: Fiorel/Acacia, Selwyn
Rating: G
Warnings: none
Word count: 1,239
Summary: Fiorel is planning a surprise for Acacia, with Selwyn's help.
Notes: Written for [community profile] origfic_bingo, for the prompt "candles". Also, this was written especially for Resemble; it just happened to fit with a prompt as well.

'How do you make candles?' )
breakfastofchampions: (fiorel: thoughts and trouble)
Title: Recurring
Universe: Goldenhour
Characters, pairings: Fiorel, Bertrand
Rating: R
Warnings: Violence, blood, death. Also, quite spoilery for the novel.
Word count: 555
Summary: Fiorel dreams.
Notes: Written for [community profile] origfic_bingo, for the prompt "nightmares".

The man's eyes are blue, dark, and wide as she slides her sword into his body. )
breakfastofchampions: (nelius)
Title: Dangerous Pet
Universe: Wind & Foxes
Characters, pairings: Vithje
Rating: PG13
Warnings: None
Word count: 1,073
Summary: Vithje got a RAW DEAL.
Notes: Written for [community profile] origfic_bingo, for the prompt "nervous breakdown". Set in the days of the Kelisav Empire, which is "olden times" from the perspective of the main characters of W&F. Also, that summary up there is the best one I have ever written.

His days are empty now. )

If you're wondering why I am doing "ritual sacrifice" twice, it's because I am working on two bingo lines at once, and they intersect at the "ritual sacrifice" square.

Title: Another Word for Love
Universe: Wind & Foxes
Characters, pairings: Kivran/Reian
Rating: PG13
Warnings: mention of suicide
Word count: 666 (I did it on purpose this time)
Summary: Reian's lover is a passionate man. Sometimes a little--too passionate.
Notes: Written for [community profile] origfic_bingo, for the prompt "ritual sacrifice". It probably helps to know that at the time they are involved, Reian is 15-16 and Kivran is 17-18. This is the counterpart of the story "Another Word for Madness", using all the same dialogue (though with a little expansion at the beginning and end), retelling the same events from Reian's PoV. Both PoVs are equally valid, I just thought it would be fun to explore both!

But first, an annoying author's cultural note that you can feel free to skip! )

Reian had heard too many love stories in his life. )
breakfastofchampions: (Default)
Sorry if this isn't that great; I was having a really bad day.

Title: Another Word for Madness
Universe: Wind & Foxes
Characters, pairings: Kivran/Reian
Rating: PG
Warnings: mentions of suicide
Word count: 666 (the devil's story!)
Summary: Kivran doesn't wish to live without his man, is predictably dramatic.
Notes: Written for [community profile] origfic_bingo, for the prompt "insanity". Oh, and I forgot to mention, at the time of this story, Reian is around 15 and Kivran is probably about 17.

They called it the gods touching your eyes. )
breakfastofchampions: (reian)
I really like how this one turned out, mainly because I've missed these characters since finishing the novel, and now I'm actually managing to come up with some viable ideas for either a sequel or a "what happened next" short story collection.

Also, don't worry if some of these might seem sad! These are things I'd like to resolve in more developed pieces.

(I think the Khelaj part is my favorite, if only because I keep laughing about it. Oh, Khelaj.)

Title: After Words
Universe: Wind & Foxes
Characters, pairings: Reian, Nelius/The Wind, Pasha, Kivran, Neri, Kai, Khelaj
Rating: PG
Word count: 1,673
Summary: After the novel's end, some of the characters reflect on the silence (or lack thereof) in their lives now.
Notes: Written for [community profile] origfic_bingo, for the prompt "silence". In some ways, this is a piece about the supposed "silence" at the end of a novel, when really, the story hasn't ended yet. It only seems to (especially when the writer misses their characters).

He no longer hears it, although it was never much of a noise. )
breakfastofchampions: (nelius)
Title: Safe From Harm
Universe: Wind & Foxes
Characters, pairings: Reian, Nelius
Rating: PG
Warnings: Some blood, nothing major.
Word count: 1,064
Summary: The world has been without sorcerers for so long, and the last living sorcerers caused so many problems. Because of this, Reian has almost forgotten something important: in the old tales, sorcerers were the great protectors of their people.
Notes: Written for [community profile] origfic_bingo, for the prompt "self-harm". You know I had to write about Nelius for self-harm!

Reian had spent so much time with Nelius, he had begun to find it easy to forget what Nelius was. )
breakfastofchampions: (nelius)
Title: Sun Kissed
Universe: Wind & Foxes
Characters, pairings: suggestions of Reian/Nelius
Rating: G
Word count: 1,332
Summary: Reian has been having inappropriate--perhaps even dangerous--thoughts about the all-powerful sorcerer in his care.
Notes: Super prompt-twisting powers go! Also, due to the limits of the English language, Kelisavian gender can be difficult to express/explore, so I have to use some of our gender binary terms to talk about it. Sorry if it seems awkward or contradictory. Written for [community profile] origfic_bingo, for the prompt "kiss".

There were four genders, one for each god. )

I am starting up a new month of Original Fiction Bingo! If you're curious, you can find my new card here.

Title: Become the World
Universe: Wind & Foxes
Characters, pairings: Ana Lijen, suggested Imbri/Reian
Rating: G
Word count: 1,625
Summary: Ana likes to keep an eye on her runaway son--but someone else has the same idea.
Notes: Set before the time of the novel, years after Reian leaves home, but only a little while after he meets Imbri. Written for [community profile] origfic_bingo, for the prompt "ritual sacrifice".

The ritual is a quiet one. )
breakfastofchampions: (acacia)
Yay, I did it! I got a bingo this month. Whew.

Title: Stealing a Robot
Universe: Goldenhour (science fiction AU)
Characters, pairings: Fier, Hadia, Pan
Rating: PG
Word count: 1430
Summary: The world's greatest robot thief (as in, thief of robots), might well be a little mad.
Notes: For [community profile] origfic_bingo, for the prompt "AU: crossover/fusion". My interpretation of the prompt was pretty loose. Reading Urasawa's Pluto made me want to write about robots, so I created an AU of Goldenhour that features robots along the lines of the ones in Pluto--it diverges quite a bit from my original story, and it doesn't technically have anything taken directly from Pluto in it, but I think it's close enough.

Also, though I do like reading and watching science fiction media, I don't have a lot of practice writing it, so this might be a little closer to science fantasy.

It's the hardest job in the world, but she's good at it. )
breakfastofchampions: (alena)
Title: Coming Home
Universe: Goldenhour
Characters: Alex, Damien, Alena
Rating: G
Word count: 1,098
Summary: Home isn't always a place.
Notes: Written for [community profile] origfic_bingo, for the prompt "reunion". Though this information will only make sense to those familiar with the storyline, this is set during the time of "Chester's adventure", when Bertrand is still King's Sentinel.

'You're in a mood today.' )
breakfastofchampions: (goldenhour brothers)
Title: Unspeakable
Universe: Lost Princes
Characters: Fyodor (Fedya), Vyacheslav (Slava)
Rating: G
Word count: 731
Summary: Slava loves the rain.
Notes: for [community profile] origfic_bingo, for the prompt "Unacknowledged Love". Secret (noun) sounds the same in Russian (секрет), in case you were wondering, as the sound of the word is a part of this story.

It was summer, and it was raining. )
breakfastofchampions: (chester)
Title: Evening Falls
Universe: Goldenhour
Characters/Pairings: suggested Chester/Matthew
Rating: PG13 (mentions of death, mutilation of shrubbery)
Wordcount: 2160
Spoilers: Various, for the novel, but things might change, as I'm always revising.
Summary: When the king falls ill, Chester is left to deal with the wreckage of Eastland's court, but Chester has his own wounds to deal with as well.
Notes: for [community profile] origfic_bingo, for the prompt "Sunset Stroll".

Chester was an old man already. )
